How to Buy a Domain

Many people want to buy a domain name that they have created or one that is preexisting, but do not know where to go. There is not one single answer to this question but there are many solutions. Since buying and selling domains has become such a popular practice, there are lots of sites you can go to with online auctions where you can buy them. Here we will look at some of the things this process requires of you.

Making up Your Own Domain

If you are looking to save money, you can make up your own domain name and go to a website to register it. This is buying a domain name that you have created and the cost will mostly go towards registering it and finding a host. Sometimes the web hosts will register the name for free as long as you are paying them for their services. Be sure to look at their policies about what fees will be charged if you change companies and other such scenarios.

Buying a Pre-Existing Domain

Many people want to buy a domain name that already exists. If the name you want is already established and well-known, it is going to cost a lot more money than one that isn't. You can talk to an appraiser and find out the value of the site in question. If you do not have a particular name in mind, try browsing through the names that are going to be up for auction soon on one of the sites that sells domain names.

What to do When You Find One

When you find a name you want that is going up for auction or being sold directly by the owner, send them an email with your best offer. Perhaps you could start lower and bargain your way up with them, or see what they are asking for. If the amount is something you are willing to pay, then that works out perfectly and you can buy it and register it accordingly.

Be aware of what is a rational asking price for a domain name; do not assume that just because they are asking more, it is more worthwhile. The reputation the site has had in the past will come into play, as will its ability to be memorized and its meaning. You can talk to an appraiser to find out what the site is worth before you potentially overpay.

Another thing to be aware of is that the bidding site you use should have a secure escrow service. If they do not, then consider finding another one to be sure that you are taking part in a trustworthy transaction.

Most basically, the way you buy a domain name is by going to an auction site and bidding on it. These sites are meant for everyone and many will walk you through the process. You just need to be sure that the site is trustworthy and that the domain name you are purchasing is worth the money you are putting down on it!
